China Has Become the World’s Largest Higher Education Country, Accounting for up to 20%
In 2016, China had a total of 265 million students of all kinds of academic education at all levels. The proportion of state financial education expenditure in GDP was maintained at 4% for 5 consecutive years. The proportion of higher education in the world’s total scale reached 20%, becoming the world’s biggest country in higher education.
Basic situation of financial education funds
According to the latest data released by the Chinese Ministry of Education, the national financial education funding in 2012 exceeded 2 trillion yuan for the first time, accounting for more than 4% of GDP also for the first time.
National financial education funding reached 3.14 trillion yuan in 2016, which exceeded 3 trillion yuan for the first time, the proportion of GDP exceeded 4% for five consecutive years.
In 2012-2016, the state financial education funding accumulated to 13.5 trillion yuan for 5 years, more than the cumulative investment in 60 years between 1952 – 2011, these 5 years have most investment in financial education since New China was founded.

Number of schools
At present, China’s higher education is in the rapid development to the popularizing stage, the international competitiveness is significantly improved. In 2016, there were 2880 higher education schools in China, 90 more than the number in 2012, including 2596 colleges and universities, 284 adult colleges and universities.

In 2016, the total number of faculty members in China’s higher education was 2,447,903, an increase of 27,285 over the previous year. The number of full-time teachers was 1,627,182, an increase of 24,371 over the previous year. The number and quality of teachers are increasing.
Among which, the number of ordinary college staff was 2,404,784, an increase of 35,455 people over the previous year. The number of full-time teachers was 1,601,968, an increase of 29,403 people over the previous year.
The number of adult higher education staff was 43,119, a decrease of 8173 people over the previous year. The number of full-time teachers was 25,214, a decrease of 5032 over the previous year.
Number of students
In 2016, the number of in-school graduate students was 1,981,051, an increase of 69,645 people over the previous year, of which 342,027 students were the doctoral students, 1,639,024 were master’s degree; the number of ordinary higher education students was 26,958,433; the number of adult higher education college and university students was 5,843,883.
Other school situations
The total construction area of colleges and universities in 2016 was 926.71 million square meters, an increase of 4.56 million square meters over the previous year. The total value of teaching and research equipment was 451.44 billion yuan, an increase of 45.68 billion yuan over the previous year, and the allocation of infrastructure is being continuously upgraded.
